Arsenal vs Manchester City: Community Shield Match Preview
Arsenal and Manchester City meet in the Community Shield on Sunday, with both sides looking to begin the new campaign by lifting the traditional curtain-raiser trophy.
The fixture has a notable connection with the Vieira name. Arsenal have twice secured major silverware through penalties involving a Vieira. Fabio Vieira converted the decisive spot kick against Manchester City in the 2023 Community Shield, while Patrick Vieira famously scored the winning penalty against Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup final.

Manchester City have a considerably smaller total, with seven Community Shield wins. Three of those came during Pep Guardiola's era, but the Citizens have experienced mixed fortunes in the competition in recent years.
Their most recent triumph came in 2024, when they defeated Manchester United in a penalty shootout. City now have another opportunity to add to their collection after securing their place in Cardiff by beating Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
This match will also represent Enzo Maresca's first competitive fixture in charge of Manchester City after an unbeaten pre-season campaign, although his side did suffer defeats in penalty shootouts.
City drew 1-1 with Inter Milan before losing on penalties, then responded with consecutive 3-1 victories over a K-League XI and Atletico Madrid. Omar Marmoush was particularly impressive against Atletico, scoring twice while Erling Haaland was absent.
Haaland is expected to return to the squad for this fixture, although his lack of pre-season minutes could mean that he starts from the bench.
The Citizens will also be encouraged by their recent record against Arsenal. City won 2-1 at the Etihad in April, with Haaland once again playing a decisive role. That result extended their record to just one defeat in their last six meetings with the Gunners.
Manchester City could also record three consecutive victories over Arsenal for the first time since 2023.

Arsenal's defensive options have been affected by injuries during pre-season.
Jurrien Timber remains sidelined with a groin problem, while William Saliba is recovering from a back injury. Timber is expected to be out for several weeks, whereas Saliba could be unavailable for a considerably longer period.
The Gunners otherwise have a strong squad available, although several players who featured at the World Cup may not be ready to start. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Zubimendi have not played during pre-season and could therefore be introduced gradually.
Bruno Guimaraes, Arsenal's £75m summer arrival, is in contention for his competitive debut after making a substitute appearance during the 1-1 draw with Como.
David Raya is also expected to start in goal after producing an impressive display in midweek, including two penalty saves. His performance should see him retain the goalkeeper position ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Rodri remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from back surgery. His absence could see Nico Gonzalez and Mateo Kovacic operate together in midfield.
New signing Elliot Anderson is still waiting to make his Manchester City debut and is unlikely to be considered for a starting role.

Both teams have plenty of quality and enter the Community Shield with different objectives. Arsenal will be eager to build on their domestic success and start the campaign with another trophy, while Manchester City will want to continue their strong recent record against the Gunners.
Arsenal's defensive injuries could be a concern, particularly against a City attack capable of creating chances from multiple areas. However, Arteta's side have demonstrated their ability to compete with the Premier League's strongest teams and have plenty of attacking options available.
With both clubs potentially relying on players who have had limited pre-season involvement, the match could be decided by individual moments rather than sustained dominance.
A closely contested encounter appears likely, with penalties again a realistic possibility if neither side can find a winner over 90 minutes.
