Fulham begin a new era on Monday when Álvaro Arbeloa takes charge of his first competitive match, following Marco Silva’s decision to return to Benfica. The former Real Madrid full-back has been handed a three-year contract and faces an immediate test against local rivals Chelsea at Craven Cottage.
Fulham have enjoyed more success in recent meetings, with Silva winning two of his final four West London derbies. Their 2-1 victory in January ended a long wait for a home win over Chelsea, and the Cottagers will now look to record consecutive victories against the Blues for the first time since the 1970s.
Arbeloa’s pre-season campaign was mixed, with Fulham winning twice, drawing twice and losing twice. They kept only one clean sheet, although that came in their final friendly against Stuttgart. History suggests another shutout will be difficult, with Fulham keeping Chelsea scoreless only twice across the last 16 meetings.
Chelsea, meanwhile, begin life under Xabi Alonso with plenty of optimism. The Blues endured a turbulent 2025-26 campaign, finishing 10th after working under two permanent managers and an interim boss, leaving them without European football.
Alonso's preferred 3-4-2-1 system has generated excitement at Stamford Bridge, but the Spaniard inherits a squad that has struggled for consistency in recent seasons. The former Bayer Leverkusen coach will be eager to make a positive first impression and secure an early victory at Craven Cottage.

Fulham have a largely healthy squad, with Tom Cairney the only confirmed injury absentee due to a knee problem. Joachim Andersen will also miss the match as he serves the final game of his three-match suspension.
Summer arrivals Gonzalo García and César Palacios could make their competitive debuts, with García expected to lead the attack and Palacios potentially operating from the left.
