Manchester City vs Bournemouth: Match Preview

Manchester City begin a new era under Enzo Maresca when they welcome Bournemouth to the Etihad Stadium, with the reigning eight-time Premier League champions determined to end their two-season wait for the league title.

Maresca has taken over following Pep Guardiola's trophy-filled decade at the club and faces the difficult task of maintaining City's winning mentality while rebuilding a squad that has seen several experienced players depart during the summer. Bernardo Silva, Rodri and John Stones are among those no longer part of the team.

City enjoyed domestic cup success last season by winning the FA Cup and EFL Cup, but they struggled to keep pace with Arsenal in the Premier League. Their preparations for the new campaign also suffered a setback as they were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal in the Community Shield.

Despite that defeat, history is firmly on City's side. Each of their last four managers won their first Premier League match in charge, while City have won their opening league fixture in 14 of the last 15 seasons. Their only defeat during that run came against Tottenham in 2021.

The Etihad has also been a difficult venue for Bournemouth. Manchester City have won all nine of their previous Premier League home meetings with the Cherries, scoring 34 goals and conceding just six.

Bournemouth Enter New Era Under Marco Rose

Bournemouth are also starting a fresh chapter after appointing Marco Rose as their new head coach. The German manager arrives following the departure of Andoni Iraola and inherits a team that enjoyed an outstanding 2025-26 campaign.

The Cherries finished sixth in the Premier League last season, recording only seven defeats in 38 matches. That was one of the best defensive records in the division and secured Bournemouth their highest-ever Premier League finish.

They also ended last season on an impressive 18-match unbeaten league run, winning eight and drawing 10 of those fixtures.

Bournemouth's pre-season offered further encouragement. They won three of their five friendly matches and scored 22 goals, including a remarkable 10-1 victory over Genoa.

However, their record in Premier League opening fixtures is less impressive. Bournemouth have won just two of their nine opening-day matches in the competition. Their record against Manchester City is also heavily against them, with just one victory in 18 top-flight meetings.

Team News

Manchester City will be without Jeremy Doku, who is expected to miss two to three weeks with a calf injury. Savinho and Omar Marmoush are also unlikely to feature as both players remain linked with possible moves to Tottenham.

Matheus Nunes is available after recovering from a minor muscle problem and could return at right-back.

With Doku unavailable, Maresca could give Jack Grealish a surprise starting role. Grealish has not started a competitive match for City in more than 600 days. Former Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo is also expected to feature in the attack.

New signing Elliot Anderson could make his Premier League debut in midfield, while Erling Haaland is expected to lead the City attack. The Norwegian striker has scored seven goals in his four previous opening-weekend Premier League appearances.

Bournemouth remain without last season's leading scorer Eli Junior Kroupi, who is sidelined with a foot injury. Amine Adli, Veljko Milosavljevic, Julian Araujo, David Brooks and Julio Soler are also unavailable.

Ryan Christie is suspended, leaving Alex Scott and Lewis Cook likely to start in central midfield.

New signings Alvaro Rodriguez and Juanlu Sanchez have returned to team training but may not yet be ready to start. Antonio Silva, who joined Bournemouth from Benfica during the summer, is expected to make his Premier League debut in central defence.

Manchester City vs Bournemouth Prediction

Manchester City will start as strong favourites thanks to their outstanding home record against Bournemouth and their impressive record in opening Premier League fixtures.

Bournemouth's unbeaten run and strong pre-season form mean they should not be underestimated, but City's attacking quality and home advantage could prove decisive.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Bournemouth
