Ferencvaros vs Real Madrid Match Preview

After back-to-back seasons without winning either La Liga or the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid have turned to Jose Mourinho for a second spell in charge, a decision that has divided opinion among the club’s supporters.

Mourinho’s reign began in impressive fashion with a 4-1 victory over Leganes, but Madrid were unable to build on that result in their second pre-season outing. Los Blancos surrendered a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina, leaving the Portuguese coach visibly frustrated at the final whistle.

Madrid will now be looking for an immediate response when they travel to Budapest to face Ferencvaros, a side they have not met since the 1995 Champions League group stage. On that occasion, the Spanish giants dominated the fixture, winning 6-1 in Madrid before drawing 1-1 away from home.

This match represents Real Madrid’s penultimate pre-season fixture outside Spain, with only a meeting against Schalke 04 remaining before they begin the 2026-27 campaign.

Ferencvaros, meanwhile, are much further along in their preparations. Unlike Madrid, the Hungarian champions have already played seven competitive matches across domestic and European competitions.

Balazs Borbely’s side have lost only one of those seven games, collecting four wins and two draws, and their recent 1-0 victory over Gornik Zabrze has put them within touching distance of the Europa League play-offs.

The club’s scheduled league fixture this weekend was postponed to allow this high-profile encounter with Real Madrid to take place in front of what is expected to be a packed Groupama Stadium.

Ferencvaros have also been strong starters in recent matches, scoring first in eight of their last nine games, with only a goalless draw against Vasas interrupting that run.

Their home form provides further encouragement. No visiting side has won at the Groupama Stadium since January, and the hosts will believe they have a genuine chance of troubling Madrid.

However, history is firmly against them. Ferencvaros are without a win in their last 12 matches against Spanish opposition and have lost the most recent four meetings.

Team News

Real Madrid are still missing a long list of key players following the 2026 World Cup. Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, Antonio Rudiger, Aurelien Tchouameni, Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe have yet to feature in pre-season.

Thibaut Courtois is also unavailable after suffering a thigh injury while on international duty with Belgium.

Further problems come in defence and attack, with Rodrygo and Eder Militao sidelined by thigh injuries, while Raul Asencio is expected to be out for around a month with a muscle issue.

Madrid’s record signing Yan Diomande, who arrived from Leipzig in a deal that could reach €140 million, is not expected to make his debut until next week.

Ferencvaros are also dealing with a few absences. Naby Keita has been injured since July and remains unavailable, while Daniel Arzani is out with a hamstring problem and Bence Otvos continues his recovery from a knee injury that has kept him sidelined since February.

One player to watch for the hosts is Brazilian midfielder Cadu, who has produced three assists in his last four home appearances and will be central to Ferencvaros’ attempts to create chances against Madrid’s reshuffled defence.
