Santos vs Macará Preview: Brazilian Strugglers Face Ecuadorian High-Flyers

Santos will look to improve a difficult domestic season when they host Ecuadorian side Macará in the Copa Sudamericana playoffs.

The Brazilian club enjoyed a memorable continental run last year, not only avoiding relegation from Serie A but also securing qualification for the Copa Sudamericana. Santos collected seven points from six group-stage matches and finished second in their section, earning a place in the preliminary playoff round. They then produced an impressive attacking display to eliminate Universidad Central with an 8-3 aggregate victory.

However, their league form has once again become a major concern. After 21 Serie A matches, Santos have managed just 22 points and currently sit inside the relegation zone. With pressure mounting domestically, the Copa Sudamericana could provide a welcome distraction and an opportunity to rebuild confidence.

Macará arrive in Brazil in much stronger form. The Ecuadorian side have collected 41 points from 24 league matches and currently occupy second place in the standings. Although they trail the leaders by 20 points and are unlikely to mount a serious title challenge, they remain firmly in contention for a Copa Libertadores qualification spot.

The visitors also enjoyed an excellent group-stage campaign in this season’s Copa Sudamericana. Macará earned 10 points from their six matches and finished top of their group, which allowed them to bypass the preliminary playoff round and advance directly to this stage of the competition.

Santos will rely on their home advantage and greater experience in knockout football, while Macará will aim to continue the disciplined and effective performances that have made them one of the stronger Ecuadorian sides this season.
