Match Preview
Xabi Alonso suffered his first defeat as Chelsea manager last weekend, with the Blues beaten 2-1 by Premier League champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Chelsea then appeared to be heading for another setback against Leeds United in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, but a stunning second-half comeback changed the mood around Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea went into the interval two goals behind and were booed off by their supporters. However, the introduction of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto helped transform the contest, with the hosts eventually securing a thrilling 6-3 victory to reach the fourth round.
Remaining in the EFL Cup will be important for Chelsea as they look to challenge for silverware during a season without European football. The Blues also have ambitions of mounting a serious Premier League title challenge, having not lifted the top-flight trophy since 2017-18.
Chelsea currently sit fourth in the standings, three points behind the perfect-starting pair of Manchester City and Arsenal. They will be confident of extending their impressive record against Hull, having avoided defeat in all 10 previous Premier League meetings with the Tigers, winning eight and drawing two.
Only Portsmouth have faced Chelsea more often in the Premier League without ever beating them. Nevertheless, there are some concerns for Alonso's side, particularly defensively. Chelsea have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 19 league matches and have conceded seven goals in their opening three games of this campaign.
Hull, meanwhile, have emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the early Premier League season. The Tigers are the only team across the top four tiers of English football yet to concede a league goal.
Sergej Jakirovic's side have collected seven points from their opening three matches, beginning with an impressive 2-0 home victory over Manchester United before beating Coventry City 1-0. They then held Aston Villa to a goalless draw last weekend.
Four consecutive clean sheets at the beginning of a Premier League campaign have not been achieved since Manchester City managed the feat in 2015-16, while no newly promoted side has ever started a top-flight season with four straight shutouts.
Hull's unbeaten start across all competitions finally ended on Tuesday when a heavily rotated side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Sunderland in the EFL Cup. A second-half counter-attack decided a closely contested game in which neither side created many clear-cut opportunities.
Jakirovic also faces the challenge of managing an extremely large squad following a hectic summer transfer window that brought 18 new players to the club. With several arrivals still needing to regain full fitness after missing pre-season, the Hull boss will have to balance squad integration with keeping his 34-man group motivated.
The Tigers will also be seeking their first league victory away to Chelsea. Hull have never won in 18 visits to Stamford Bridge, drawing three and losing 15. It is their longest run without an away league victory against any opponent across the top four divisions of English football.

Team News
Chelsea remain without Jordan Henderson, who is recovering from a wrist problem, and Emmanuel Emegha, who has a muscle injury. Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra are also doubts due to unspecified issues.
Levi Colwill avoided a serious injury after the midweek victory over Leeds and is expected to be available. He could compete with Maxence Lacroix, Josh Acheampong and Wesley Fofana for a place in Chelsea's back three.
Morgan Rogers is expected to return to the starting lineup after his remarkable substitute appearance against Leeds, when he registered four assists. The Chelsea record signing has been directly involved in a goal in each of his three Premier League appearances for the club, scoring twice and providing one assist.
Cole Palmer is also expected to start after scoring twice in the EFL Cup. He has an impressive record against newly promoted opposition, contributing to 15 goals in 15 Premier League appearances against such teams, with nine goals and six assists.
Joao Pedro is expected to lead the Chelsea attack, with Palmer operating in support.
Hull have several injury concerns. Ilyas Ansah, Jack Butland, Elliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi, Charlie Hughes and Hidemasa Morita remain unavailable, while Tim Iroegbunam, Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Paddy McNair face late fitness tests.
Nobel Mendy was withdrawn at half time against Sunderland, but Jakirovic confirmed afterwards that the substitution was planned rather than injury-related. He should therefore be available to partner Semi Ajayi and John Egan in defence.
Oscar Zambrano has recovered from a hamstring problem but was left out of Hull's 25-man Premier League squad. Matt Crooks, Lucas Gourna-Douath, Christos Mouzakitis and Jens Hjerto-Dahl are competing for a midfield role alongside Regan Slater.
Oli McBurnie could make his 100th Premier League appearance in this fixture. The striker is still searching for his first goal of the campaign, although his work rate has been exceptional, with 258 high-intensity pressures — 74 more than any other player in the division.
Match Outlook
Chelsea's attacking quality and home advantage make them favourites, but Hull's remarkable defensive record means Alonso's side should not expect an easy afternoon.
The Tigers have already demonstrated that they can frustrate established Premier League opponents, while Chelsea's recent defensive record suggests they could be vulnerable at the other end.
A fast start from Chelsea could be crucial, particularly if Palmer and Rogers can exploit spaces behind Hull's defensive structure. For the visitors, maintaining their defensive discipline and frustrating Chelsea for long periods may be the key to taking something from Stamford Bridge.
