Barcelona have made a flying start to the 2026-27 La Liga season, winning all four of their opening matches against Elche, Athletic Bilbao, Rayo Vallecano and Valencia. Hansi Flick’s team have scored 17 goals across those fixtures, underlining the attacking quality that has put them at the top of the table.
While domestic success remains important, Barcelona’s biggest ambition this season will be to lift the Champions League trophy. The Catalan giants last won Europe’s premier club competition in 2015, but their recent campaigns have ended in disappointment. They were eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals last season after reaching the semi-finals in 2024-25.
Barcelona’s attacking options remain among the most dangerous in Europe, although questions continue to surround the defensive side of the team. Flick will hope his players can maintain their excellent start while also producing a stronger defensive performance in the Champions League.
The two clubs have only met twice previously, with both encounters coming in the last-16 stage of the 1974-75 European Cup. Barcelona came out on top 3-0 on aggregate.
Feyenoord arrive in Spain with plenty of confidence of their own. The Dutch side are unbeaten in their first five matches of the campaign, recording three victories and two draws. They come into this fixture after a convincing 3-1 win over Nijmegen.
Feyenoord, who finished second in the Eredivisie last season, have also enjoyed an impressive unbeaten run across all competitions since the beginning of March. However, Barcelona will represent a significant step up in quality.
The Dutch club have a proud European history, having won the European Cup in 1970 after defeating Celtic 2-1 in the final. More recently, their European campaigns have been less successful. They failed to progress from the league phase of the 2025-26 Europa League and were eliminated in the Champions League third qualifying round that same season.
Feyenoord last reached the Champions League knockout stages in 2024-25, when their run ended in the round of 16 against Inter Milan following a 4-1 aggregate defeat.

Team News
Barcelona will be without Frenkie de Jong, Roony Bardghji and Eric Garcia for this Champions League encounter. De Jong and Bardghji are recovering from knee injuries, while Garcia is suspended.
Jesse Bisiwu remains doubtful despite returning to training.
Flick has several selection decisions to make, with Marc Bernal, Dani Olmo and Karim Adeyemi all pushing for starting roles. However, the trio could once again begin the match on the bench.
Garcia’s suspension is expected to give Jules Kounde an opportunity at right-back. In attack, Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon and Fermin Lopez could provide support for Raphinha.
Feyenoord have a longer injury list. Thomas Beelen, Bart Nieuwkoop, Gjis Smal, Jakub Moder and Jordan Bos are all expected to miss the contest.
Gjivai Zechiel has been one of Feyenoord’s standout performers at the beginning of the season. The midfielder has scored four goals and provided three assists in five appearances and should retain his place in the centre of midfield.
Luciano Valente has also made an excellent start, scoring three goals in five appearances, and is expected to feature from the opening whistle.
Nacho Ferri is likely to lead the line, while Shaqueel van Persie is expected to begin among the substitutes.
