Inter Miami vs San Diego: Match Preview
Inter Miami will return to MLS action looking to build on their midweek international success when they welcome San Diego to Florida.
Lionel Messi added another major achievement to his remarkable career on Wednesday, helping Inter Miami claim the Campeones Cup with a 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul. The triumph marked Messi's 48th career trophy and gave Miami another piece of silverware to celebrate.
The focus now switches back to the MLS, where Miami will be looking to extend their unbeaten home run in the regular season to four matches.
Despite their success in cup competition, Miami have struggled to turn their opportunities into victories domestically. They have dropped points in seven of their last eight MLS matches, although they have suffered only two defeats during that stretch.
That run has left Miami second in the Eastern Conference, with only three points separating them from fourth place.
Kily Gonzalez's side remain one of the most dangerous attacking teams in MLS, averaging 2.4 goals per match, the highest figure in the league. However, their defensive record has been less convincing, with Miami conceding an average of 1.8 goals per regular-season game.
Miami have also remained unbeaten at home against Western Conference opponents this season. Their most recent victory in that category came in May, when they defeated Portland Timbers 2-0.
San Diego fighting to remain in playoff position
San Diego enter the contest under pressure as they attempt to hold onto the final playoff position in the Western Conference.
Mikey Varas' side have lost their last three MLS matches and currently sit just ahead of the Los Angeles Galaxy on goal difference. With nine matches remaining, the margin for error is becoming increasingly small.
Defensive problems have contributed significantly to their recent struggles. San Diego have conceded 42 goals this season, already one more than they allowed throughout their inaugural MLS campaign.
Their away record has also declined sharply compared with last season. San Diego won 12 road matches in 2025, the best total in MLS, but have managed only two away victories so far this year.
Discipline has been another issue, with San Diego leading the league for red cards after receiving eight dismissals.
The California club are also still searching for their first regular-season away victory in Florida. Their most recent trip to the state ended in a 1-0 defeat against Orlando City earlier this month.

Inter Miami are dealing with several injury concerns ahead of the match.
Mateo Silvetti is expected to miss the game because of a shoulder problem, while Santiago Morales is dealing with a quad issue. Micael has an ankle sprain, and Tadeo Allende continues to recover from a knee injury.
