Tottenham Hotspur's opening three Premier League matches of the 2026-27 campaign have represented slow but noticeable progress. After beginning the season with a heavy defeat at Brentford and then losing at home to Newcastle United, Spurs finally produced a performance worthy of a result against Nottingham Forest.
However, Roberto De Zerbi's side were unable to turn their dominance into goals. Tottenham enjoyed 59% possession and registered 11 attempts, but not a single effort was on target as they were forced to settle for a goalless draw.
The result means Spurs remain one of just three Premier League teams yet to score this season, alongside Aston Villa and Coventry City. Tottenham have previously endured a four-game Premier League scoring drought, doing so around 20 years ago during the 2006-07 campaign. That sequence also included a 2-0 home defeat against Everton, who return to North London looking to exploit Spurs' current attacking struggles.
Everton could inflict Tottenham's 50th Premier League home defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Yet history also offers the hosts some encouragement, as Spurs' only victory and clean sheet in their last 12 Premier League home fixtures came against Everton.
The Toffees were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham on the final day of last season, a result that sparked survival celebrations among the home supporters. Everton, however, have since endured a difficult summer transfer window, leaving some supporters concerned about whether the club can continue avoiding another relegation battle.
Despite failing to secure another striker before the transfer deadline, Everton found an unlikely hero against Manchester United. New signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles produced a spectacular 25-yard strike to rescue a 2-2 draw and preserve the Toffees' unbeaten start to the new season.
The result extended Everton's unbeaten record both in the Premier League and across all competitions, providing some much-needed relief after a turbulent transfer window.
Away from home, however, Everton have struggled for consistency. They are without a victory in their last six Premier League away matches, although James Tarkowski's stoppage-time equaliser rescued a point at Bournemouth during that run.
Everton's record against Tottenham away from home is another concern. The Toffees have lost their last five Premier League visits to Spurs and were beaten 4-0 on aggregate across the two league meetings last season.
Another defeat without scoring would see Everton lose three consecutive league games against Tottenham without finding the net for the first time in the club's history.

Tottenham continue to deal with problems in their creative department. James Maddison returned to team training before the trip to Nottingham Forest but was not included in the matchday squad, meaning the midfielder remains a significant doubt for Saturday's fixture.
Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons are also continuing their recoveries from knee injuries and remain unavailable.
Mykhaylo Mudryk made his first competitive appearance in more than 600 days against Forest, but the Ukrainian winger has suffered another setback. An ankle injury is expected to keep him sidelined for approximately six to eight weeks.
De Zerbi will therefore need to find solutions in attack as Spurs continue their search for their first Premier League goal of the campaign.
Everton's team selection could also be influenced by injuries. Ainsley Maitland-Niles was able to produce the decisive moment against Manchester United after James Garner was ruled out, although Garner has not yet returned to full fitness.
Hayden Hackney could therefore move into central midfield alongside Harrison Armstrong, while Maitland-Niles may continue at right-back, potentially allowing Merlin Rohl to operate in a more defensive role.

Tottenham's inability to convert possession and chances into goals is likely to be the central storyline at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Their defensive improvement against Forest was encouraging, but another ineffective display in the final third could leave them vulnerable to an Everton side that has started the season unbeaten.
The visitors have struggled on the road for some time and have a poor recent record against Spurs, but their confidence should be high after collecting seven points from their opening three league matches.
For Tottenham, breaking their scoring drought will be the immediate priority. For Everton, extending their unbeaten start while finally ending their long wait for an away win could turn an encouraging opening into a genuinely positive beginning to the season.
