Manchester United vs Sabah: Match Preview
Manchester United are set to begin their Champions League campaign with a home meeting against Sabah at Old Trafford, as they return to Europe’s premier competition after a season away from European football.
The Red Devils missed out on European competition entirely in 2025-26, but their return to the Champions League marks their 26th appearance in the tournament, an English record. United’s last campaign in the competition came in 2023-24, when they finished bottom of a group containing Bayern Munich, Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
There will be considerable pressure on Michael Carrick to guide United to a much-improved European campaign. While the club remain among the biggest names in continental football, a serious challenge for the Champions League trophy would be a difficult target given their recent struggles.

Their latest outing ended in a 2-2 draw against Everton, leaving them with four points from their opening three Premier League matches. That result sees them sitting 11th in the table, five points behind early leaders Manchester City.
The three-time European champions have not reached the Champions League knockout stages since the 2021-22 campaign, when Atletico Madrid eliminated them in the last 16. They will be hoping for a much stronger showing this time around.
United face a challenging league-phase schedule, with Atletico Madrid, Como, Roma, Sporting Lisbon, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Villarreal among their opponents.
Sabah arrive in strong form
Sabah have already had a long European journey this season, beginning their Champions League campaign in July. The Azerbaijani champions successfully negotiated four qualifying rounds, defeating TNS, KuPS, Aarhus and Hapoel Be'er Sheva to reach the league phase for the first time in the club's history.
Their confidence will be high after a superb 5-0 domestic victory over Zira. Sabah have also made an excellent start to their domestic title defence, winning all three of their opening league matches to collect nine points and move to the top of the table.
The visitors have won six of their eight Champions League matches this season, keeping four clean sheets in the process. Their recent European experience could make them a difficult opponent despite the huge difference in stature between the two clubs.
United's recent Champions League record offers Sabah further encouragement. The English side have won only one of their last seven group-stage matches, while defensive weaknesses have been a concern during the early part of the season.

Manchester United are expected to rotate their starting XI with the Manchester derby against Manchester City coming up on Sunday.
Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, Carlos Baleba, Amad Diallo and Tom Heaton remain unavailable because of injuries. Marcus Rashford is also a doubt after being substituted against Everton with a minor problem.
Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui and Andrey Santos could be among those brought into the starting lineup. Benjamin Sesko is another strong candidate to start after making an impact from the bench against Everton, where he scored late in the match.
Carrick will have to balance the need for a positive Champions League start with the importance of Sunday's Premier League clash.
Sabah team news
Sabah have no major injury concerns heading into their historic Champions League league-phase opener and are expected to have a fully fit squad available.
Joy-Lance Mickels has been one of their most dangerous attacking players this season, contributing eight goals and one assist in 11 appearances. His form will give United's defence plenty to think about.
Veljko Simic is another key threat. The attacker has already found the net seven times this season and added one assist, while Kaheem Parris is also expected to play an important role in the final third.
The outlook
Manchester United will enter the match as clear favourites, particularly with home advantage and a vastly greater level of Champions League experience. However, Sabah's impressive qualifying campaign, strong domestic start and attacking form mean the hosts cannot afford to be complacent.
For United, the priority will be to start their European campaign with a convincing performance and build momentum ahead of a demanding domestic schedule. Sabah, meanwhile, will be aiming to make their league-phase debut memorable by producing a major upset at Old Trafford.
