Chelsea vs Luton Town Match Preview

Chelsea turn their attention to the EFL Cup after beginning life under Xabi Alonso with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Fulham in the Premier League. The Blues produced an impressive attacking display at Craven Cottage, securing their first opening-day league win in several seasons and giving their new manager an encouraging start.

Cole Palmer was the standout performer, contributing both a goal and an assist, while Joao Pedro and club-record signing Morgan Rogers also found the net. Alonso was delighted with the attacking trio and believes they have the potential to form a special partnership as the season develops.

Now Chelsea shift their focus to the EFL Cup, a competition they have won five times but have not lifted since 2015. They reached the semi-finals last season before being eliminated by Arsenal and will be determined to make a deeper run this year.

The Blues have an outstanding record against lower-league opposition in the competition, progressing from 27 of their last 28 EFL Cup ties against teams outside the Premier League. Stamford Bridge has also been a difficult venue for visiting sides, making Chelsea overwhelming favourites to advance.

Luton Town arrive in good form despite playing in League One. The Hatters ended last season on a 12-match unbeaten run and have continued that momentum into the new campaign, recording two victories and a draw from their opening three matches.

Their league season began with a dramatic 4-3 win over Reading before they were held to a 2-2 draw by Notts County. New striker Callum Marshall opened his account for the club in that match, while Luton also booked their place in the second round of the EFL Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory away to Gillingham.

However, Chelsea represent a significantly tougher challenge. Luton have lost their last five meetings with the Blues and have not won any of their last six competitive visits to Stamford Bridge. They have also been eliminated from eight of their last nine EFL Cup ties against Premier League opposition, highlighting the scale of the task facing Jack Wilshere's side.

Team News

Chelsea remain without Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha due to injury, while Moises Caicedo, Marco Palestra and Aaron Anselmino face late fitness checks after missing the Fulham match.

With a busy schedule ahead, Alonso is expected to rotate heavily. Danny Welbeck, Valentin Barco, Pep Chavarria and goalkeeper Mike Penders could all be handed opportunities from the start, while Geovany Quenda, Estevao Willian, Jamie Gittens and Pedro Neto are also pushing for inclusion.

The availability of Enzo Fernandez remains uncertain amid continued transfer speculation.

Luton will be without Jordan Clark after the midfielder suffered a broken jaw against Notts County, while Shaydon Morris and Shandon Baptiste are also sidelined.

Sverre Sandal or Hakeem Odoffin could return to midfield, with Liam Walsh and Kasey Palmer expected to feature. In attack, Callum Marshall, Gideon Kodua, Jerry Yates and Makhi Wells are all competing for starting places.

Prediction

Chelsea's squad depth and strong home record make them clear favourites, even if Alonso makes several changes to his starting lineup. Luton should compete with confidence after their positive start to the season, but overcoming a Premier League side at Stamford Bridge would require an exceptional performance.

Prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Luton Town
