Elche vs Barcelona: Match Preview

Barcelona begin their 2026-27 La Liga campaign with a difficult away trip to Elche, who will be hoping to build on a positive opening-day result.

Elche started their league season on August 17 with a 1-1 draw against Deportivo. After finishing 15th in La Liga last season, the club's main objective this campaign will be to stay clear of the relegation battle and establish themselves as a regular top-flight side.

Martin Anselmi has taken charge of Elche on an initial one-year contract, with the 41-year-old coach facing the challenge of improving a team that narrowly avoided serious trouble last season.

The club have been active in the transfer market, bringing in eight new players to strengthen the squad. However, they face a major test against Barcelona.

Elche have struggled badly in this fixture, losing their last 12 meetings with Barcelona in all competitions. Their last victory over the Catalan giants came way back in December 1974.

Barcelona Begin Title Defence

Barcelona enter the new campaign with major ambitions. Hansi Flick's side will be targeting another La Liga title while also aiming to compete strongly for the Champions League.

Their league opener against Athletic Bilbao was postponed until August 27 because several Barcelona players were involved in the later stages of the 2026 World Cup. As a result, this match against Elche will represent their first competitive fixture of the new season.

Barcelona enjoyed a largely encouraging pre-season, winning four of their six friendly matches. Their final warm-up ended in a 2-1 victory over Al Ahly, giving Flick plenty of reasons for optimism ahead of the campaign.

The Catalan club have also strengthened their squad with several major additions. Rodri has arrived from Manchester City, while Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Jesse Bisiwu and Joao Cancelo have also joined the club.

Barcelona remain active in the transfer market as they look to strengthen their attack following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

Team News

Elche will be without Yago Santiago and Adam Boayar due to injuries, but otherwise have a strong squad available for the contest.

Anselmi is expected to continue with a 3-4-3 system, although Lucas Cepeda could be introduced into the attack. New signing Fer Nino is also expected to feature through the middle.

Barcelona will be without Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji, while Rodri is not expected to make his debut yet as he continues to build up his fitness.

Teenage forward Hamza Abdelkarim could be handed his competitive debut after an impressive pre-season in which he scored four goals.

Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez and Raphinha are expected to provide attacking threat, while Pau Cubarsi is still working his way back to full fitness following the World Cup.

Eric Garcia could therefore start at right-back, with Jules Kounde likely to feature centrally in defence.

Elche vs Barcelona Prediction

Elche will be encouraged by their opening-day draw, but Barcelona represent a significant step up in quality. The visitors have a dominant record in this fixture and possess considerably more attacking options.

Barcelona should control possession and create enough opportunities to secure a comfortable opening victory.

Prediction: Elche 0-3 Barcelona
