PSG vs Aston Villa Preview: UEFA Super Cup 2026 Final
European champions Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa will battle for the first major continental trophy of the new season when they meet in the UEFA Super Cup 2026 on Wednesday night in Salzburg.
PSG arrive as holders of the UEFA Champions League, while Aston Villa earned their place after winning the UEFA Europa League in emphatic fashion.
PSG aiming for back-to-back Super Cup glory
Paris Saint-Germain are looking to become the first club since Real Madrid in 2017 to successfully defend the UEFA Super Cup. Luis Enrique’s side won last year’s edition by coming from behind to draw with Tottenham Hotspur before triumphing on penalties.
The French champions followed that success with another European crown at the end of last season, defeating Arsenal in the Champions League final after a tense 1-1 draw and a dramatic penalty shootout.
Luis Enrique has already collected 12 trophies since taking charge at the Parc des Princes, and the Spaniard will be targeting number 13 before PSG begin their Ligue 1 title defence later this month.
PSG have had a mixed start to pre-season. A youthful side suffered a 3-0 defeat to Mallorca, before the Parisians were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United. Despite lacking full match sharpness, PSG have been remarkably consistent in front of goal, scoring in 28 consecutive competitive matches since January.
Their previous meetings with Aston Villa also suggest an entertaining contest could be in store. PSG edged Villa 5-4 on aggregate in last season’s Champions League quarter-finals, with both legs producing plenty of chances and drama.
Aston Villa chasing another historic European trophy
Although Aston Villa were eliminated by PSG in the Champions League, Unai Emery’s men went on to enjoy a memorable Europa League campaign, culminating in a commanding victory over Freiburg in the final in Istanbul.
That triumph ended the club’s 30-year wait for a major trophy, but Villa have undergone significant changes during the summer. Key players Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans have departed, while the club moved quickly to strengthen the squad by signing Alejandro Garnacho, Joao Gomes and Johan Manzambi.
Villa’s pre-season has been busy, with six friendlies producing three wins and three defeats, including a narrow 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich in their most recent outing.
Emery is renowned for his success in the Europa League, but the UEFA Super Cup has proved elusive. The Spanish coach has lost all three of his previous appearances in the competition, including a dramatic 5-4 defeat to Luis Enrique’s Barcelona during his time at Sevilla.
Interestingly, Aston Villa have a perfect Super Cup record, having beaten Barcelona in their only previous appearance shortly after winning the 1982 European Cup.
Team news
PSG welcomed back several World Cup stars against Manchester United, including Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves and captain Marquinhos. More big names could return in Salzburg, with Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Fabian Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi, Lucas Hernandez and Warren Zaire-Emery all in contention.
The French side have also been active in the transfer market. Maghnes Akliouche has arrived, while former Villa left-back Lucas Digne has joined the club. Ferran Torres is also expected to complete a move to Paris soon.
For Aston Villa, Alejandro Garnacho and Joao Gomes could make their competitive debuts. However, Johan Manzambi is ruled out with a knee injury, while John McGinn remains a doubt after picking up a knock in pre-season. Amadou Onana is also unavailable with an ACL injury.
Villa will hope that Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez are fit enough to start, while Boubacar Kamara has recently returned to action. Young forward Brian Madjo has been one of the stars of pre-season, scoring four goals after becoming eligible to play.
Match prediction
PSG may not yet be at peak fitness, but they possess greater depth, more individual quality and the momentum of being reigning European champions. Aston Villa have enough attacking talent to cause problems, especially on the counterattack, yet Emery’s side are still integrating several new signings.
Given the attacking quality on both sides and their recent high-scoring encounters, this final could produce plenty of entertainment.
Prediction: Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 Aston Villa
PSG’s superior firepower and experience on the biggest stage should ultimately prove decisive, allowing Luis Enrique to add another trophy to his growing collection.
