Santos vs Athletico Paranaense Preview: Neymar Suspended as Peixe Face Title-Chasing Visitors
Santos welcome Athletico Paranaense to the Vila Belmiro on Sunday in a Brasileirão clash that brings together two sides fighting for very different objectives.
The hosts sit 15th in the table with 22 points from 20 matches and are still trying to pull clear of the relegation zone, while Athletico Paranaense occupy third place with 37 points from 21 games and remain firmly in the championship race.

Santos were hoping to rely on the creativity of Neymar and the finishing of Gabigol, but the former Brazil captain will miss the match through suspension, placing even greater responsibility on the rest of Cuca’s attack.
Santos boosted by cup win but league concerns remain
Santos arrive with confidence from the Copa do Brasil, where they defeated Remo 1-0 away from home in the round of 16. Substitute Rony scored the winner after being set up by Neymar, giving the Peixe a valuable boost after a difficult run in the league.
However, their Brasileirão form is still worrying. Santos have not won a league game since beating Vitória in round 18, and have followed that result with a defeat to Botafogo and a draw against Chapecoense.
Since Cuca replaced Fabio Vojvoda in March, Santos have generally looked more competitive in knockout competitions than in the league. The coach has also struggled to find the right balance when using Neymar, Gabigol and Benjamin Rollheiser together, as the team often becomes more vulnerable defensively with all three in the same starting XI.
Athletico enjoying a strong title challenge
Athletico Paranaense have been one of the most consistent teams in Brazil this season.
Odair Hellmann’s side collected 33 points from their first 19 matches, their best start since 2013, and have strengthened their grip on third place with 37 points from 21 rounds.
Their run of four consecutive league victories ended with a 0-0 draw against Corinthians, but the visitors remain one of the division’s strongest defensive units.
The back-three system has been particularly effective, with Athletico conceding only 19 goals in 21 league matches.
Viveros remains the danger man
Colombian striker Kevin Viveros has been the standout performer for Athletico Paranaense this season.
The forward is currently joint-top scorer in the Brasileirão with 12 goals in 21 appearances, level with Flamengo’s Pedro, and has averaged roughly one goal every 156 minutes.
He is expected to lead the line alongside Steven Mendoza and Leozinho, with Jadson providing the creative link behind the front three.
Copa do Brasil humiliation
The visitors do come into the match after a painful setback.
Athletico were thrashed 4-0 by Vitória in the Copa do Brasil on Thursday, crashing out 4-2 on aggregate despite winning the first leg 2-0 in Curitiba.
Hellmann will be demanding an immediate response as his side return to league action.
