Tottenham Hotspur will be aiming to bounce back from their disappointing Premier League opener when they welcome Newcastle United this weekend.
Roberto De Zerbi's side endured a difficult start to the new campaign, suffering a 3-0 defeat away to Brentford. However, Spurs quickly responded in midweek with an impressive 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup.
New £85m signing Savio made an immediate impact from the bench, scoring once and providing an assist. Mikey Moore, Dominic Solanke, Kevin Danso and Ben Davies were also on target as Tottenham secured their place in the third round, where they will face Liverpool.
Spurs will now turn their attention back to the Premier League, where they are looking to avoid beginning a season with two consecutive defeats for the first time since 2011-12.
Home advantage could prove important for De Zerbi's team. Tottenham have won each of their last five opening home league matches, scoring 14 goals while conceding just once during that run.
However, Newcastle have been a difficult opponent for Spurs in recent years. Tottenham have lost six of their last eight Premier League meetings with the Magpies, while they have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 14 encounters.
Newcastle looking to build momentum
Newcastle United also began their Premier League campaign with a draw, conceding a late penalty to Liverpool to finish 2-2 at home.
They responded positively in the EFL Cup, though, overcoming Championship side West Bromwich Albion 3-2 at St James' Park.
The Magpies received another boost before kick-off when new £50m signing Nico Gonzalez was officially unveiled. Fellow summer recruit Bazoumana Toure then gave the home side the perfect start by scoring his first goal for the club.
Harvey Barnes made the difference after coming on at half-time, scoring twice in the second half to secure Newcastle's progression.
New manager Matthias Jaissle has been impressed by the enthusiasm of the Newcastle supporters and has promised an entertaining brand of football from his young squad following last season's disappointing 12th-place finish.
One concern for Newcastle is their record when protecting leads. They dropped more points from winning positions than any other Premier League side during 2025-26, surrendering 29 points in total.
Their away record is another area that needs improvement. Newcastle have won only four of their last 22 Premier League away matches, drawing six and losing 12.
Nevertheless, Tottenham have traditionally been one of Newcastle's favourite away destinations. The Magpies have won more Premier League away games against Spurs than against any other opponent, including victories in three of their last four visits to North London.
Team News
Tottenham have several injury concerns heading into the fixture.
Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odebert are all sidelined with knee injuries, while James Maddison will undergo a late assessment after suffering a shoulder problem.
Pape Sarr's availability is also uncertain amid transfer speculation. Mohammed Kudus could potentially return to the squad after spending more than seven months out with a thigh injury.
De Zerbi may hand Omar Marmoush his Tottenham debut after the club completed his transfer from Manchester City. Savio could also be rewarded for his impressive midweek display with a place in the starting lineup.
Sandro Tonali, who became Tottenham's club-record £100m signing earlier in the summer, is expected to feature against his former club. He could line up in midfield alongside Mateus Fernandes and Conor Gallagher.
Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro both came off the bench in midweek and could return to the starting XI. Van de Ven could replace Marco Senesi and partner Jan Paul van Hecke, while Porro may take over from Archie Gray at right-back.
Newcastle are also dealing with several absences. William Osula remains sidelined with a foot injury, while Dan Burn, Joelinton and Tino Livramento are all recovering from ankle, groin and calf problems respectively.
Toure suffered a knock during the midweek cup match but is expected to be available after reporting only minor discomfort.
Gonzalez could make his full Newcastle debut in midfield, potentially pushing either Lewis Miley or summer signing Sean Steur out of the starting XI.
Anthony Elanga will be hoping to continue his excellent start to the campaign. The winger scored against Liverpool and has already found the net once from just two shots this season, matching his entire league tally from the previous campaign.
Elanga is expected to start on the right, while Barnes and Toure could compete for the opposite flank.
