Manchester United vs AC Milan — Match Preview
Manchester United head into their final pre-season fixture against AC Milan in confident mood after a largely positive summer campaign. The Red Devils have already lifted two pre-season trophies, winning the Snapdragon Cup with a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid before overcoming Leeds United on penalties to claim the Boyle Sports Cup.
After opening pre-season with a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham, United responded impressively with a 5-0 demolition of Rosenborg. They then drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain before beating Atletico Madrid and edging Leeds in a penalty shootout.
The Milan clash will provide one final test before United begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaign away to Hull City on August 22. Manager Michael Carrick will be keen to finish pre-season with another encouraging performance as several players look to build match fitness.
United have strengthened their squad this summer with the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Karl Darlow and Tynan Thompson, although further transfer activity could still take place before the September deadline.
AC Milan Looking for First Pre-Season Win
AC Milan arrive with a contrasting record. Ruben Amorim's side are still searching for their first victory of pre-season after drawing with Celtic and Inter Milan before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.
Milan began preparations with a 2-2 draw against Celtic, followed by a 1-1 draw in the derby against Inter. Their most recent outing ended in disappointment as Chelsea recorded a convincing three-goal victory.
The Rossoneri will therefore see this match as an important opportunity to build confidence before opening their Serie A campaign away to Torino on August 23.
Amorim's appointment at Milan has naturally attracted plenty of attention because of his difficult spell at Manchester United. The Portuguese coach managed 63 matches during his time at Old Trafford, recording 24 victories and suffering 21 defeats.
Milan finished fifth in Serie A last season and have added Goncalo Ramos, Mario Gila and Sankhoun Diawara to their squad this summer.
Team News
Manchester United have included Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford in their squad, with all three potentially making their first appearances of pre-season.
Benjamin Sesko remains unavailable because of a shin injury, while Mason Mount is also expected to miss out after suffering a foot problem against PSG.
Harry Maguire was rested against Leeds but should return to the starting lineup. Bruno Fernandes, Tielemans, Luke Shaw and Matheus Cunha could also come into the XI.
Andrey Santos has been one of United's standout performers during pre-season and is expected to start once again. His impressive displays have strengthened his chances of featuring from the beginning against Hull City in the Premier League opener.
For Milan, Goncalo Ramos could make his first start after coming off the bench against Chelsea. Ruben Loftus-Cheek and veteran midfielder Luka Modric are also expected to feature.
Amorim is likely to continue with his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation. Rafael Leao, however, is unavailable because of a muscular injury, while his future at the club remains the subject of considerable speculation.
Samuel Chukwueze could again operate in a wing-back role as Milan look to find greater balance ahead of the competitive campaign.
Match Prediction
Manchester United appear to have the stronger momentum heading into this fixture. Their recent performances have shown greater attacking quality and defensive improvement, while Milan are still adapting to Amorim's system and have yet to win during pre-season.
With several United players returning to the squad and others competing for starting places, the Red Devils should have enough quality to finish their preparations with another positive result.
Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 AC Milan
