Hull City vs Manchester United: Match Preview

Hull City are set to make their long-awaited return to the Premier League after an absence of nearly a decade. The Tigers last competed in England’s top flight during the 2016-17 season and secured promotion back to the Premier League after progressing through last season’s Championship playoffs.

Sergej Jakirovic has overseen a significant squad rebuild during the summer, with 11 new players arriving as Hull prepare for the demands of top-flight football. Nobel Mendy, signed from Rayo Vallecano, is among the club’s notable additions.

Hull’s pre-season campaign produced two wins, two draws and one defeat. Their final preparation match ended in a goalless draw against Nice, giving Jakirovic’s side a solid defensive platform heading into their opening league fixture.

Historically, Hull have found Manchester United difficult to overcome. The Tigers have won only three of their last 18 meetings with the Red Devils in all competitions. Their most recent Premier League encounter, however, finished 0-0 in February 2017.

Manchester United will arrive with ambitions of beginning the new Premier League season with a victory. The Red Devils defeated Hull 1-0 on their previous league visit to the MKM Stadium in August 2016.

United have also strengthened their squad during the summer, bringing in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow. Carlos Baleba is expected to follow, while further additions could be made before the transfer window closes.

Michael Carrick’s team experienced an inconsistent end to pre-season, losing 4-2 to AC Milan. However, their overall preparations included impressive results against Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid, while they also drew with Paris Saint-Germain and Leeds United.

After finishing third in the Premier League last season, Manchester United will have the additional challenge of competing in the Champions League. The club will also be targeting strong domestic cup campaigns.

Team News

Hull City have several injury concerns ahead of their Premier League opener. Eliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi, Jack Butland, Oscar Zambrano, Charlie Hughes, Joe Gelhardt and Hidemasa Morita are expected to miss the fixture.

Cody Drameh and Matty Jacob remain doubts and will require late fitness assessments before the match.

Manchester United are also dealing with a number of fitness issues. Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte are unavailable, while Mason Mount is facing a late fitness test.

Benjamin Sesko has returned to training and could be included in the squad, although a starting appearance looks unlikely following his recent injury layoff.

New signing Karl Darlow could make his first matchday squad appearance for United, while Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans are expected to make their competitive debuts.

Bryan Mbeumo is also in contention to operate through the middle of the attack. Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez’s limited pre-season involvement could result in Ayden Heaven partnering Harry Maguire in central defence.

With Hull City returning to the Premier League and Manchester United looking to begin the campaign strongly, this fixture promises to be an intriguing opening-day contest. The Tigers will hope home advantage can help them produce an early statement, while United will be determined to leave with all three points.
