Ipswich Town vs Liverpool – Match Preview
Ipswich Town made a promising start to their 2026-27 campaign but suffered a heavy setback at the end of August, leaving Gary O’Neil’s side eager to respond when they return to Portman Road.
The Tractor Boys were beaten 5-2 by Manchester United in their most recent Premier League outing. Despite taking an early lead through Leif Davis, Ipswich struggled to contain United and eventually found themselves on the wrong end of a high-scoring defeat. The result highlighted some defensive concerns, particularly after they had shown plenty of promise earlier in the campaign.
Home form could provide encouragement ahead of Friday’s meeting with Liverpool. Ipswich opened their league campaign with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland, securing all three points through Jack Clarke’s dramatic 90th-minute winner. They also recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over Leicester City in the EFL Cup on August 25.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have endured a frustrating opening to the new season. The Reds are still searching for their first Premier League victory after drawing their opening two matches.
Their latest outing ended in a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, with summer signing Victor Munoz rescuing a point with a late equaliser. Liverpool had also shared the points with Newcastle United in their opening fixture, meaning they will be under pressure to produce a much-improved performance at Portman Road.
The club strengthened their attacking options after announcing the £123 million signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain. The 24-year-old winger could provide Liverpool with another attacking dimension, although he is expected to begin Friday’s match on the bench.

Ipswich will be without Jaden Philogene-Bidace, who is recovering from an ankle injury, while striker Emersonn remains a doubt because of a knee problem. Should Emersonn miss out, Chuba Akpom is expected to lead the attack, with Abdul Fatawu and Daizen Maeda potentially operating alongside him and Julio Enciso playing in the number 10 position.
O’Neil also has midfield concerns. Azor Matusiwa is sidelined with a muscle injury, Jack Taylor has a knee problem and Florentino Luis is doubtful. Marcelino Nunez and Sasa Lukic could therefore form the midfield pairing, with Issa Diop and Jacob Greaves expected to provide the defensive cover behind them.
Liverpool continue to deal with several injury absences. Hugo Ekitike remains out while recovering from an Achilles rupture, while Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley are undergoing rehabilitation following significant knee injuries.
Joe Gomez is also unavailable because of a muscle injury picked up during pre-season, while Federico Chiesa has yet to feature this season due to a minor back problem.
Alexander Isak is therefore expected to lead the Liverpool attack, with Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Victor Munoz potentially supporting him. Barcola could be introduced from the substitutes’ bench.
At the back, Virgil van Dijk is expected to continue alongside Jeremy Jacquet, while Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez could occupy the full-back positions.

Ipswich will be hoping their strong home performances can give them a platform to challenge Liverpool, but the visitors arrive with greater pressure to secure their first league victory of the season.
Liverpool’s attacking quality should make them favourites on paper, although Ipswich have already demonstrated that they can be dangerous at Portman Road. The hosts will need to avoid the defensive lapses that contributed to their defeat against Manchester United if they are to take anything from the contest.
