Club Brugge vs Aston Villa: Match Preview

Aston Villa return to Champions League action looking to put their difficult domestic start behind them when they travel to Belgium to face Club Brugge.

The Villans are enjoying another taste of European football after ending a long wait for major silverware by winning last season's Europa League. Under the guidance of Unai Emery, Villa won 13 of their 15 matches in the competition on their way to the trophy.

Emery remains one of the most experienced managers in European competition and is now preparing for his ninth Champions League campaign. However, Villa's squad has undergone significant changes during the summer, with several key players from last season's successful side departing.

The rebuilding process has yet to produce results in the Premier League. Villa opened their campaign with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brighton before losing narrowly at home to Arsenal. Their struggles in front of goal continued at newly promoted Hull City, where they were held to a goalless draw.

That result left Villa with just one point from their opening three league matches and highlighted the lack of cohesion within Emery's youthful new-look squad.

They will now return to a familiar destination in Bruges. Villa faced Club Brugge twice during their previous Champions League campaign, losing 1-0 in Belgium before responding with a 3-1 victory in the knockout stage. They also completed the tie with a comfortable 3-0 win at Villa Park.

Club Brugge enter the contest with considerably better domestic momentum.

The Belgian champions are preparing for their eighth Champions League campaign in the last nine seasons and their 13th overall, a national record. They have also progressed beyond the group or league phase in each of their last three appearances.

Brugge finished 19th in last season's league phase before suffering a 7-4 aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid in the knockout playoffs. Their matches were often entertaining affairs, producing an average of 4.2 goals per game.

The Belgian side are particularly dangerous at home. They have scored at least three goals in six of their last seven Champions League matches at Jan Breydelstadion and have lost only three of their last 22 European fixtures on home soil.

Their record against English opposition is less impressive, though. Club Brugge's victory over Villa in 2024 remains their only success in their last 19 meetings with English clubs, with 15 of those matches ending in defeat.

Ivan Leko's team have nevertheless made an encouraging start to their domestic title defence. After five Belgian Pro League matches, Brugge have recorded four wins and one defeat and currently sit second in the table.

Team News

Aston Villa have several selection issues heading into the Champions League opener.

Brian Madjo, who scored twice against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, was surprisingly left out of Villa's Champions League squad and is currently unavailable through injury. Johan Manzambi and long-term absentee Amadou Onana are also sidelined.

Joao Gomes, however, is eligible to feature in Europe despite serving a three-match domestic suspension.

Leon Goretzka could make his Aston Villa debut, while teenage prospect Ibrahim Mbaye and record signing Nicolas Jackson are both competing for starting places.

New goalkeeper Zion Suzuki is expected to make history by becoming the first Japanese goalkeeper to appear in the Champions League.

Club Brugge will be led by captain Hans Vanaken, who scored the winning goal against Villa in their previous meeting in November 2024. Vanaken is expected to continue in midfield alongside Freddie Potts.

The hosts will also be able to call upon striker Nicolo Tresoldi, who has already scored three league goals this season and remained at the club despite interest in several of Brugge's key players during the summer.

Defender Joel Ordonez is the only confirmed injury absentee for the Belgian side.

With Aston Villa desperate to rediscover their confidence and Club Brugge boasting an impressive home record and strong domestic form, this Champions League encounter could provide a stern test for Emery's revamped squad.
