Manchester City vs Atletico Madrid Preview: Citizens Face Simeone’s Side in Final Pre-Season Test
Manchester City will conclude their pre-season preparations with a high-profile clash against Atletico Madrid as both European giants continue building towards the 2026-27 campaign.
The Citizens have experienced a mixed start to life under new head coach Enzo Maresca. City opened August with a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan before losing the subsequent penalty shootout 3-1. They responded positively in their most recent outing, defeating K-League Stars 3-1 to secure Maresca’s first victory in charge.
This will be City’s final friendly before they shift focus to competitive action, with Arsenal awaiting in the Community Shield on August 16. The Premier League campaign then begins at the Etihad Stadium against Bournemouth on August 23.
New-look City still taking shape
Manchester City are expected to undergo further transfer activity before the summer window closes. The club have already completed four signings, with Elliot Anderson’s big-money move from Nottingham Forest attracting the most attention.
Maresca is still searching for the right balance in his new system, and the meeting with Atletico should provide a much tougher tactical examination than the win over the K-League Stars.
Atletico seeking response after United defeat
Atletico Madrid arrive in England after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Snapdragon Cup. Diego Simeone’s side had taken the lead but were eventually beaten by a Bryan Mbeumo double.
The Spanish club began pre-season in impressive fashion with a 4-1 victory over Getafe, and they will also face Marseille before opening their La Liga season at home to Malaga on August 19.
Atletico have strengthened their squad with the arrivals of Lee Kang-in, Morten Hjulmand and Alejandro Grimaldo, while they have so far resisted strong interest from Barcelona in star forward Julian Alvarez.
Simeone will demand a sharper display after his side were second-best for long periods against Manchester United.
Pre-season form

Manchester City 3-1 K-League Stars

Team news
Manchester City remain without Erling Haaland, who has not yet joined the squad following Norway’s involvement in the 2026 World Cup. Rayan Cherki, Marc Guehi, Elliot Anderson and Nico O’Reilly are also unavailable.
There is continued speculation surrounding Rodri, who is recovering from a minor back operation and has been linked with a sensational move to Barcelona.
Omar Marmoush impressed from the bench last time out and could be handed a start, while Phil Foden, Savinho, Antoine Semenyo and Ruben Dias are all expected to feature.
Atletico will be without Julian Alvarez, who is still on post-World Cup leave. Nahuel Molina, Giuliano Simeone, Alex Baena, Alejandro Grimaldo and Alexander Sorloth are also absent.
New signing Lee Kang-in has been included in the squad and could make his debut, while fellow arrival Morten Hjulmand is expected to start. Experienced figures such as Koke, Robin Le Normand and Ademola Lookman should also be involved.
Match prediction
This should be the most demanding test of Manchester City’s pre-season so far. Maresca’s side are still adapting to a new tactical structure, while Atletico’s compact shape and aggressive pressing are likely to cause problems.
City may enjoy more possession, but Atletico’s experience and counter-attacking threat could make this a closely contested encounter.
Prediction: Manchester City 2-2 Atletico Madrid
