Inter Miami vs Monterrey Match Preview

Inter Miami began their Leagues Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, producing a dominant first-half display and scoring four goals on matchday one to maintain their unbeaten home record in the group stage of the competition.

A victory on Saturday would put the Herons in a strong position to secure qualification for the knockout rounds for a fourth consecutive Leagues Cup appearance.

New head coach Angel Guillermo Hoyos enjoyed a winning start in the tournament on Wednesday, and Miami now have the opportunity to extend their unbeaten run at Nu Stadium to five matches in all competitions.

The Herons have historically been very difficult to stop at home when they take control early. They have never lost a Leagues Cup home match after leading at half-time, with their only defeat in such circumstances coming away to Columbus Crew in 2024.

Goals have rarely been a problem for Miami in this competition. They have scored two or more goals in all but one of their Leagues Cup group matches, and they have found the net in 16 consecutive competitive fixtures heading into this weekend.

Monterrey, by contrast, arrive under pressure after a disappointing opening performance. The Mexican side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Orlando City, their second loss in the last three matches across all competitions.

Their recent record against MLS opposition is also concerning. Monterrey have failed to win any of their last seven meetings with MLS teams in normal time, with their only success coming via penalties against the New York Red Bulls last year.

Head coach Matias Almeyda has lost two of his first three competitive matches in charge, and his team will be aiming to record their first 90-minute victory over MLS opposition in the Leagues Cup since defeating Los Angeles FC in the 2023 quarter-finals.

Defensively, Monterrey have repeatedly made life difficult for themselves, conceding the opening goal in eight of their last nine matches in this competition.

One factor that may give the visitors confidence is their perfect historical record against Inter Miami. Monterrey won both legs of the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final against the Herons and remain unbeaten in all previous meetings between the clubs.

The biggest positive remains Lionel Messi, who broke the all-time Leagues Cup scoring record in the opening game by scoring his 13th and 14th goals in the tournament. Telasco Segovia and Micael also found the net in the win over Atletico San Luis.

For Monterrey, Erick Aguirre remains a doubt because of ongoing muscle discomfort.

The visitors’ only goal against Orlando City was scored by Hugo Cuypers late in the match.

Prediction: Inter Miami 2-1 Columbus Crew.
