Manchester City vs Inter Milan Match Preview

Manchester City begin a new chapter under Enzo Maresca as the Premier League giants kick off their 2026-27 pre-season campaign with a blockbuster friendly against Serie A champions Inter Milan in Asia.

Following the departure of Pep Guardiola after a historic decade at the Etihad Stadium, Maresca faces the challenge of building on City's recent success. Although the Citizens lifted a domestic cup double last season, they fell short in the Premier League title race and are now using a three-match Asian tour to prepare for the new campaign.

City will face Inter Milan before taking on a K-League All Stars XI and Atletico Madrid in Seoul. With several senior stars still unavailable after their FIFA World Cup commitments, Maresca is expected to hand valuable opportunities to several academy graduates and young summer recruits.

Key players including Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Rodri are absent. Haaland and Guehi remain on post-World Cup holidays, while Rodri continues his recovery from back surgery. Jack Grealish is also sidelined with a foot injury, leaving City with a youthful squad featuring exciting prospects such as Jeremy Monga, Divin Mubama and Ryan McAidoo.

The match also rekindles memories of the 2023 UEFA Champions League final, where Manchester City defeated Inter to secure their first European crown.

Inter Milan arrive in excellent spirits after a superb 2025-26 season. Cristian Chivu guided the Nerazzurri to a domestic double, winning both the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia. Inter finished 11 points clear at the top of the league and claimed their 21st Scudetto while lifting their 10th Coppa Italia trophy.

Despite an early UEFA competition exit, Chivu's debut campaign has been widely praised, and Inter are once again among the favourites to defend their Serie A crown.

The Italian champions have already impressed during pre-season, beginning with a remarkable 16-0 victory over German amateur side SV Aasen before coming from behind to beat Karlsruher 2-1 thanks to Andy Diouf's stoppage-time brace.

Following their clash with Manchester City, Inter will continue their preparations with high-profile friendlies against AC Milan and Juventus in Australia before opening their Serie A campaign against Monza later this month.

Like City, Inter are also missing several World Cup participants. Captain Lautaro Martinez remains unavailable, while youngsters Mattia Marello, Leonardo Bovio and Jamal Iddrissou have featured prominently during pre-season. New arrivals Aleksandar Stankovic and goalkeeper Ivan Provedel are also expected to play key roles as Chivu continues reshaping his squad.

Pre-season Form

Manchester City: First friendly of the summer.

With both clubs missing several established stars, this friendly offers an excellent opportunity for emerging talents to stake their claim ahead of the new season. While the result is secondary, the tactical battle between Maresca and Chivu and the performances of their young players will make this one of the standout pre-season fixtures.
