Manchester United vs Ipswich Town: Match Preview and Team News
Manchester United will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing opening-day defeat when they welcome newly promoted Ipswich Town to Old Trafford.
United ended last season strongly after Michael Carrick returned to the club in the New Year, taking charge with the Red Devils seventh in the Premier League on 32 points from 21 matches. Carrick helped transform their fortunes, guiding United to 12 victories in their final 17 league games and securing a third-place finish.
That was Manchester United's best Premier League finish since the 2022-23 campaign, offering renewed optimism after eighth- and 15th-place finishes in the two seasons before Carrick's return.
The club strengthened during the summer with the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow, while Carlos Baleba was also brought in shortly before the start of the campaign.
However, the optimism surrounding United quickly disappeared on the opening weekend as they suffered a shock 2-0 defeat away to Hull City.
Hull took the lead after 17 minutes when Semi Ajayi followed up to score after Senne Lammens had denied Oli McBurney and pushed his effort onto the post. The hosts then doubled their advantage when record signing Nobel Mendy headed home a pinpoint free-kick from Regan Slater on his debut.
The defeat was a particularly disappointing one for Carrick's side, as it represented the first time Manchester United had lost their opening Premier League fixture against a promoted club, ending a 13-match unbeaten run in such games.
United also struggled to make their 21 attempts count, with a lack of cutting edge in the final third proving costly. Carrick will therefore be eager to see a much more clinical performance in front of their home supporters.
Ipswich, meanwhile, enjoyed a dream return to the Premier League.
The Tractor Boys secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland on the opening weekend, with Clarke scoring a 90th-minute winner to seal three valuable points against a Sunderland side that had impressed during their previous Premier League campaign.
Ipswich's promotion comes only one season after they were relegated from the top flight. They finished 19th in the 2024-25 Premier League season with just 22 points from 38 matches, winning only four games.
Kieran McKenna then guided the club straight back to the Premier League after Ipswich finished second in the Championship with 84 points. However, McKenna opted to take a break from management during the summer, prompting the club to appoint former Wolves and Strasbourg boss Gary O'Neil.
O'Neil inherited a squad in need of significant strengthening and Ipswich responded by investing more than £100m during the summer transfer window. Seven new signings were handed debuts on the opening day, and the newcomers immediately helped the club claim an important victory.
The win over Sunderland was also significant because Ipswich had to wait until November to record their first Premier League victory during their previous spell in the competition.
While Manchester United received a bye into the third round of the League Cup due to their European commitments last season, Ipswich were required to play in midweek. They came through that test successfully, beating Leicester City 3-1 and recording their first victory over the Foxes since 2013.

Manchester United continue to deal with several injury problems ahead of their first home match of the campaign.
Carlos Baleba, who completed his move from Brighton during the week, will have to wait for his United debut after suffering an ankle injury during Brighton's pre-season training camp in Austria.
Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte are also expected to miss the fixture. United could potentially be without Ugarte for an extended period, with his return possibly delayed until next season.
No new injuries were reported following the defeat to Hull, but Carrick could still make changes to his starting XI.
Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are among those pushing for a place in the starting lineup as United attempt to respond immediately to their disappointing opening result.
Ipswich Town Team News
Ipswich made nine changes to their side for the midweek League Cup victory over Leicester, so further alterations are likely for their trip to Old Trafford.
Dara O'Shea was the only defender to retain his starting position against Leicester and is expected to keep his place for the third consecutive game.
Marcelino Nunez also started in midfield and produced an excellent performance, scoring twice, including a spectacular effort from around 45 yards. He is also expected to feature again.
Clarke could be rewarded for his dramatic late winner against Sunderland with a starting place after initially coming off the bench. Abdul Fatawu may therefore drop to the substitutes' bench.
Ipswich have relatively few injury concerns, although Azor Matusiwa and Florentino Luis remain unavailable. Luis is still waiting to make his first appearance for the club.
With Manchester United desperate to recover from their opening-day setback and Ipswich arriving with confidence after two consecutive victories, this could be an intriguing contest at Old Trafford.
